This article does not itself plow any new ground. What makes it somewhat remarkable is where it appeared. Counterpunch is a left source for articles almost always dedicated to issues around class warfare and western colonialism, which is fine as far as it goes. And this article is consistent with that perspective. However what I have never seen on counterpunch is any discussion of overpopulation. This cracks the ice of their limited ideology and one can only hope that they now are ready to break out of the box they have been in and start to enrich their analysis with the elephant in the room that they have been in denial of for so long.

Frankly it is hard to imagine a problem that doesn't have overpopulation significantly in the background. Let a 1000 elephants bloom so to speak.

Hi, Dingo, you've got that right! Then we have to look at what has caused this gross overpopulation, and the consequences of over-pollution, depletion of resources, and the population crash from one cause or many causes. Even without the thermageddon scenario playing out, the pollution and depletion would make it nearly impossible to survive many, many years of a malevolent biosphere.
There are the causes of fossil fuel use 500K times regeneration, and its affect of making more food from depleting the soil and waters to the point of a third left. We have really idiotic religions and cults, and ignorant old customs and cultures, plus the fact that the lowest spectrum reproduced the most out of ignorance, lack of education and lack of ability to be educated enough.
There are a variety of things that can start or reinforce the crash, from geologic events due, world financial collapse from the failure of the dollar, disease cluster pandemics, or warfare up to EMP attack. With a world food supply only a couple months worth, and droughts ravaging sensitive overpopulated areas, it would not take much.
